CLAIRE HAS CREATED A SELF-PORTRAIT EVERY YEAR SHE HAS ATTENDED ST. TIMOTHY'S SCHOOL (10 YEARS). SHE CAN SEE THAT SHE HAS IMPROVED A LOT SINCE PRE-KINDERGARTEN! THAT GIVES HER THE CONFIDENCE TO CONTINUE TO INNOVATE!
Welcome to Lower School Art Class News
"Smart people are a dime a dozen but being a GENIUS means you must be CREATIVE..." Walter Isaacson, renowned author of books about geniuses
This is a photo of Denise. She was my student Kinder-4th grade. Now she is an adult who interns at NCMArt and is getting her Masters in painting! She remembers the LS Art class as a safe, fun, educational place. So great to reconnect with her!
Lower School Visual Art Benefits
1. Some students can be involved in Band, Drama, Chorus, and Visual Art all in the same period of time.
2. The students attend exhibits and receptions outside of STS (i.e. NC State Fair, NC Museum of Art).
3. All PreK-8th grade Visual Art students create kiln-fired clay pieces.
4. All PreK-8th grade Visual Art students create self-portraits. They are kept from year to year as a record of their progress as an artist. The students take them home at the end of their 8th grade year.
5. All PreK-8th grade Visual Art students study art history, including an intensive study in 3rd grade which includes a field trip to the NC Museum of Art.
6. In Visual Arts the students use media that are often only used by HS and professional artists (i.e. acrylic paint).
7. The PreK-8th grade Visual Art program is cohesive.
8. The PreK-8th grade students learn about moral character through the study of Art History.

The Lower School Art program at St. Timothy’s encourages students to use their imaginations and creative abilities as a form of self-expression. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the use of line, shape, color, value, and texture through the study of art history and creation of art projects. These experiences help the students gain an increased awareness and appreciation for the role of art and design in their environments. It also helps foster an understanding of art, whether as participants or as lifelong viewers of art. All Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade students attend art classes weekly. In grades Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd, a strong emphasis on the development of hand-eye coordination, using art materials correctly (as an artist), color theory, and basic drawing skills are accomplished through numerous projects. In 3rd and 4th grade, a greater emphasis is placed on art history, individual problem-solving, and drawing in a realistic style. The program is supplemented by art history classes and field trips to the North Carolina Museum of Art. A variety of media are explored including tempera, acrylic and watercolor paint, oil pastels, paper sculpture, printing ink, and kiln-fired clay.
Classroom Management
I expect the children to follow the Art Room rules. My approach is to praise and reward those that are following all of the rules and procedures.
1. Follow directions the first time they are given.
2. Raise your hand to be called upon before speaking.
3. Respect your teacher and fellow students.
4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
5. Talk quietly and only with the people at your table when working.
6. Use and share art supplies properly.
Those that do not follow the rules will be warned and then if they continue, they will have the consequence of losing time participating in the art activity.
The parent will be notified through a conversation regarding negative behaviors that cannot be resolved. I hope to share many positive behaviors through Veracross and conversations.
Explanation of grades
In Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, no grades will be given. This is a time to innovate. The students are expected to participate, cooperate, exhibit a good attitude and have fun!
In 1st-4th grade they are evaluated using the following:
E-Exhibiting strength
D-Developing as expected
B-Beginning to develop
N-Not yet apparent
In 5th grade they are evaluated using the following:
E= Excellent=Student consistently exceeds the standards being assessed.
S= Satisfactory=Student is often meeting the standards being assessed.
P=Progressing= Student is not meeting some of the standards being assessed.
N= Needs Improvement=Student is consistently not meeting the standards being assessed.
