5th Grade- It’s fun to have 5th graders who have chosen to take Visual Art as an elective. The students will focus much time and effort into improving their skills as realistic drawers. The artists M.C. Escher, Eric Carle and Paul Cezanne will inspire them. Soon they will be traveling the globe getting inspiration from artists from the East to the West. From the Orient, the students will paint in the style of the Chinese and Japanese masters. From Africa, the students will receive inspiration to create foil relief mask images. Then the young artists will create a clay mask attempting to copy the style of a mask from a specific culture worldwide. From Egyptian inspiration, they will create an Egyptian Pharaoh/Queen Self Portrait. Back in the USA, they’ll get inspiration for block prints from Pop Artist, Andy Warhol. They’ll also create an acrylic Pop Art painting on a real canvas!
This year the 5th graders also learned the skill of Fusing Glass! Some "experts" didn't think they were skilled enough to do it. Check out the photos below and you will see they created masterpieces!

The 5th graders are becoming Life-Ready. Throughout their life, they are going to meet people who are different from themselves but now they know that we all want the same kinds of things= beauty, power, transformation, celebration, religion, and protection. I hope they keep learning about and meeting different kinds of people from all over the world!

Students Learn the Art of Glass Fusion
St. Timothy's School's fifth grade art students welcomed local glass artist Dan Hohl to campus for lessons in the art of glass fusion. Glass fusion is a technique used to create art out of glass. Rather than soldering the glass pieces together, glass fusion melts two or more pieces of glass on top of each other at high temperatures using a kiln. The students planned their pieces, then learned how to make their design a reality by cutting glass or mashing glass pieces to fit their design. Once the design is complete, the pieces were put in the new STS kiln to complete the fusion process.
This innovative project was made possible by a grant from the Dr. A. Joseph Diab Foundation.
